The My Family Tree is an excellent tool for recording just about every possible detail on your family history.
A program imports existing trees from GEDCOM files, or you can easily start from scratch, adding individuals and a host of details on them: relationships, photos and stories, video, audio, general attachments, even genetics. There’s plenty of depth to these options, too. An extensive “Details” section allows you to add the name, birth and death dates, nationality, religion, social security number, title, education, description, confirmation date, first communion and more.
Relationships are reasonably flexible: children can be “natural”, “adopted” or foster”, a spouse can be “current” or “former”, an “Unrelated” option allows you to connect friends, witnesses or others you might need to reference later.Even a basic tool like adding an image manages to impress, with support for scanners, one or two basic editing options (“Rotate”, “Sepia”), printing, slideshows and more.
A host of other views are just a click away. There’s an ancestors tree; an interactive timeline; lists of sources, photos, stories and more, and handy pages of statistics and family details. (If you’d like a count of the surnames in your family tree, say, or a graph showing the distribution of family ages at death then you’ll find them here.)
A set of useful reports provides further ways to analyse your tree, most notably highlighting possible errors: people who’ve lived “too long”, have no parents, have duplicate named children, have events after death, and so on.And the program is rounded off with plenty of small but welcome extras, such as its ability to password-protect your tree and ensure its details remain private.
My Family Tree is a genealogy application designed to help you quickly create your family tree using an intuitive interface.
You can import your GEDCOM files allowing you to get started and map out your family tree quickly. Of course, you can always export them as well.
Interactive family charts feature multi-touch pan and zoom and a novel date perspective for viewing charts at different points through history.
Family statistics analysis is available for births, deaths, and marriages and you can view all family events in an interactive timeline.
My Family Tree has more features than we can cover here. It does make it as simple as possible to organize your family tree.

Family history’s big business as far as the internet’s concerned: just imagine, details of your ancestors’ lives (as well as some of your own records) are all publicly available online – for a price, of course. The big websites like Ancestry have wrapped up the market in online record archives, but the internet offers more than just a digital database, with family history themed social networks making it possible to get in touch with far-flung relatives and distant cousins.
If you ignore the tie-in, then Family Tree Builder is actually one of the better free programs for recording and organising your family history, along with any associated documents and media files. It has everything you’d expect of a genealogy program, plus some features that put it on a par with paid-for titles. Most impressive of all is the image-handling tools, which feature facial detection allowing you to quickly and easily tag photos of various family members – this feature requires you upload your photos via the Sync tool first, and can take some time to complete. There’s also all the options you need for recording details about your ancestors, plus additional tools like charting and report publishing, mapping and so on.

Some features are limited for free account holders – you can only upload the first 250 individuals in your tree to the MyHeritage.com website for example, while only the first 50 locations are supported by the mapping tool. Even without these extras, though, Family Tree Builder has many of the tools a budding genealogist needs.
The core family tree view is very configurable. You might choose to show all generations, just immediate family, maybe those born after a particular date; there are options to hide descendants, ancestors, siblings and more; you can show or hide dates, photos, genders and so on; there are even built-in themes to change the background and colour scheme.
MyHeritage.com is one such website, and one of its key selling points is that it provides this – Family Tree Builder – for no cost. The catch is that you’ll need a MyHeritage.com account to use it, but as this needn’t cost you a cent, it’s no major drawback, and you’ll be able to use the program to track down possible matches with other MyHeritage.com members quickly and easily, even if it costs a pretty penny in terms of upgrading to a Premium subscription in order to actually merge those records into your tree.
